Online Dating: What You're Doing Wrong

These days, it seems like everybody is doing the online dating thing. Based on what you hear single people saying, hardly anyone meets the “old fashioned” way anymore. If that's the case, though, then why the heck aren't you having any luck? Fact is, there are a lot of ways that a guy can screw up online dating. Chances are, you're guilty of any number of infractions – and they are costing you a lot of potentially excellent dates. How can you determine what it is you're doing wrong, and how can you correct it? Never fear, intrepid reader: DW is here to help you right your wrongs.

You're Not Standing Out
We know: You hardly ever get messages from women on popular online dating sites. Even if you look like Brad Pitt's twin brother, you're not going to get a lot of attention on major dating websites because most of the women who are signed up on them simply don't have the time to make the first move. For the most part, women are pummeled with messages the instant they create a new dating profile. They barely have time to come up for air before going on to the next message. With that in mind, the messages that you send to women on these sites must help you stand out – in a good way.

You're Sending Stupid Messages
To reiterate: You need to stand out, but not in a bad way, in the messages that you send. Remember, the initial “hello” message is the first impression that this woman is going to have of you. If you come across as idiotic, she's going to click the “trash bin” icon and send you on your merry way. Rejection occurs at lightning speed online, and stupid messages rule you out before you can even get a toenail in the door. Messages that involve excessive slang, text message-style prose or other irritating things will have her saying “Next!” in no time flat.

You're Creepy
If you haven't already noticed this, it's important to realize that something written and something spoken can come across in entirely different ways. You need to flirt differently via email than you would in a bar or in any other “real life” situation. Randomly complimenting a woman whose profile you like about her ample bosom, for instance, is a definite way to get your name placed under the “creepy” column. Remember that she's a person, too. If nothing else, pretend that your mom or your sister would monitor the message – how would she respond to it? If she'd gasp in shock, then revise it pronto.

Your Picture Sucks
Everyone has their “good pictures” and their “bad pictures.” Even the most photogenic people on the planet produce a bad picture from time to time – and even the less attractive among us are capable of producing a decent picture, too. Don't be lazy, then, and resort to putting a grainy, unattractive picture of yourself on your dating profile. Similarly, don't use a picture where you're just a speck in the distance, and don't use one where you're all sweaty or otherwise a hot mess. Put your best face forward, and good luck!
